Frequently Asked Questions

How long are the sessions?

A typical counselling session is 50 minutes long. The other 10 minutes of the session are used to book a follow-up session and take care of administration activities such as payment of the session. I do set aside time every day to complete case notes for each session.

What is your cancellation policy?

I require clients to provide 24 hours of notice to cancel appointments. If 24 hours of notice for cancellations is not provided, the full session rate will be required.

How do I decide what to work on?

Some people come to counselling with a specific goal or struggle in mind. Others may not have a specific goal, but experience discomfort and uneasiness and have the urge to shift something in their lives. Not having it all figured out is okay. We will start with what is most important for you and your current experience, and together we will formulate a treatment plan that you are comfortable with. The important thing to remember is that you don’t have to talk about something if you do not want to.

How will I know when I am ready to end counselling?

Working on our mental health and well-being is a lifelong commitment. Choosing to engage in counselling requires effort and is a personal commitment. Most people know they are ready to end counselling when they have experience progress in the goals they have set for treatment. This is something that we will discuss more in-depth at the beginning of counselling as well as throughout the counselling process. Sometimes people choose to take breaks and then come back to counselling. Regardless, ending counselling is something that you have total control over.

What are the benefits and risks of counselling?

Possible benefits of counselling include but are not limited to a greater understanding of self, others, and personal experiences, increased ability to cope, shifting unwanted behaviours and thinking patterns and increased sense of hopefulness and joy in life.

The counselling process does require time and effort, and it is not uncommon for people to feel vulnerable.
