Teen Counselling
12-18 years old.
The teen years are filled with a variety of biological changes, cognitive changes, and psychological changes, that can bring challenges for both teens and parents. For parents, this can be a difficult and scary time. You may wonder if you are being overly protective or need to step back.
Counselling teens is a different process than counselling adults and even young children. They require a different approach that is relevant to them. My focus will be on building trust and developing a strong therapeutic relationship. This provides the foundation to begin incorporating strategies and interventions that support your teen with coping, exploring their problem and coming up with new ways to tackle the challenges of being a teenager.
I will also utilize a family systems approach which involves having parents and other important people in the teen's life participate in sessions with the teen.
I provide treatment for the following areas but not limited to:
-
Anxiety
-
Depression
-
Anger and aggression
-
2SLGBTQl+ and self discovery
-
Emotional outburst
-
Social challenges
-
Family and relationship conflicts
-
Suicidal thoughts
-
Self-harm
-
Grief and loss
-
Trauma
Important considerations when accessing teen counselling:
-
The teen has to be willing to attend and engage in counselling.
-
Parents and caregivers often wonder what information they are entitled to when their teen is accessing counselling. I am bound by confidentiality to share any risk of harm to self and other (self-harm, suicidal ideations and attempts) as well as any experiences of physical, sexual or emotional abuse or neglect and court subpoena. This will be explored further during the intake session with the teen present.

Sometimes life can present certain challenges, and stress can build up. Life transitions can be difficult and not what we expect.
As adults, we often experience pressure within our families, jobs and relationships. This can lead to burnout and a lack of joy in our lives.
We come to realizations about past experiences or our relationships that create turmoil.
These stressors leave us feeling lonely, guilty and/or overwhelmed. In our therapeutic relationship, we will work together to help you understand and process your experience while creating a path forward where you feel empowered and in control.
